BIOGRAPHY & MEMOIR

NONFICTION

Miller, Alice. For Your Own Good: Hidden Cruelty in Child-Rearing and the Roots of Violence. NY: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1990.
Miller paints a jolting picture of the violent world each generation helps shape when traditional upbringing, with its hidden cruelty, is perpetuated. She also offers a way out by striving to resensitize the child in the adult, to unlock an emotional life frozen in repression.

daCosta Nunez, Ralph. The New Poverty: Homeless Families in America NY: Insight Books,1996.
The author describe how the face and nature of homelessness has changed. Now, the typical homeless family head-of-household is a young, single woman without a high school diploma or substantial work experience.

McGready, Sr. Rose Mary. God Isn’t Done With Me NY:Coverant House,1993.
Stories from the Covenant House crisis shelter where more than 35,000 kids are lovingly rescued each year.

FICTION

Edwards, Kim. The Memory Keeper’s Daughter. NY: Viking, 2005.
A husband’s choice to give away his Down syndrome daughter deceptively becomes the defining moment of a family’s life. David's undetected lie warps his marriage; he grapples with guilt; Norah mourns her lost child; and Paul not only deals with his parents' icy relationship but with his own yearnings for his sister as well.

Guen, Sara. Water for Elephants: A Novel. Chapel Hill, NC: Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 2006.
Sara Gruen spares no detail in chronicling the squalid, filthy, brutish circumstances in which the main character finds himself after joining the circus. Jacob is the only person in the book who has a handle on a moral compass and as his reward he spends most of the novel beaten, broken, concussed, bleeding, swollen and hungover.

Nemirovsky, Irene. Suite Francaise. NY: Knopf, 2006.
This extraordinary work of fiction about the German occupation of France is embedded in a real story as gripping and complex as the invented one. Composed in 1941-42 by an accomplished writer who had published several well-received novels, these works (2 novellas) describe "daily life, the emotional life and especially the comedy it provides."
