The Giver is a futuristic novel that begins with a boy who inhabits what at first appears to be an ideal world: no conflict, poverty, unemployment, divorce, injustice, or inequality. But this ideal world has a dark side, and there is a price to be paid conformity.
One Book, One Community Essay Theme
The Giver is an unusual look into the potential future, how a given society has reshaped itself to address issues of poverty, hunger, and social unrest. However, the resulting model carries its own imbedded
problems in the form of social conformity and control of individuality. Although many social problems seem to be resolved in the society described in the book, this "perfect" society may in fact be flawed.
In a letter to County Chief Executive, Dan Onorato, tell him what your own future might look like and how to design that future for the benefit of the collective whole. Include how you would like to see your community look 10-15 years from now.
