Book Group Basics

How to start a book group and keep it going

After you do some preliminary planning, you'll be set to enjoy the fun of reading and talking about good books.

Tips for starting a book group

  • Get the word out.
    • Invite participants by calling or e-mailing friends.
    • Publicize with flyers or posters.
  • Set some simple guidelines.
    • When, where, and how often will the book group meet?
    • What time will the group meet?
    • How long will the discussion last?
    • Who will prepare and lead the discussion?
    • Will there be refreshments?

Tips for organizing a book group

  • Guidelines for choosing books.
    • Determine the group's focus or purpose and select appropriate titles. What atmosphere do you want to create? For example, will your group's focus be scholarly/academic/intellectual or social/bonding?
    • Books that are good for discussion may include the following characteristics:
      • Explore basic human truths,
      • Present the author's view of an important truth,
      • Hold the interest of a diverse group of readers,
      • Raise many questions and issues that stimulate discussion,
      • Include three-dimensional characters that are forced to make difficult choices.
    • Be ready to read books that stretch your mind, and books that are in a subject area that you may not regularly read.
  • How can you find books that are good for discussion?
    • Ask a librarian. Libraries often have booklists and resources to help book groups.
    • Read book reviews to get ideas.
    • Consider selecting books by themes, such as award-winners, memoirs, banned books, international authors.
  • Decide who will choose the titles.
    • Will all the members offer suggestions and vote?
    • Will the leader select the books?
    • Will the selection rotate among all the members?

Tips for the book group leader

  • Prepare discussion materials, such as a brief biography of the author and several open-ended questions to stimulate discussion.
    • Questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no limit discussion.
  • Facilitate the discussion.
    • Encourage each member to participate.
  • Have a basic structure in mind, but be prepared to be flexible.
  • Remind the group that there is no right or wrong in the art of literary interpretation.
  • Try to maintain a balance between reflections on the book and personal reactions.

Remember, the most essential aspect of any book group is that it is fun. Have fun in the process of sharing thoughts and reflections about the book.
