History

Organized in 1946, the Glenshaw Century Club has always been a vibrant and forward- moving woman's club. The object of the club is to provide for the advancement of education and improvement of young men and women by granting scholarships based on merit and need, promote the good and welfare of the aged, poor or distressed, and to raise funds for such purposes.

Two fundraisers are held each year. The first is our annual House Tour & Bazaar, traditionally on the first Saturday on November. Two homes in the Glenshaw area are selected to be decorated by club members in a Christmas theme, with all beautifully crafted decorations available for purchase. The Bazaar features handmade crafts, wreaths, arrangements, garden accessories, gourmet booth, and a white elephant booth. Our gracious tea table offers tea and coffee poured by ladies of the club and a vast array of cookies. Members start planning for this event early in the summer.

The second fundraiser is our Bridge Luncheon & Fashion Show in April. Again, using the many talents of our members, the Chinese Auction features spectacular gift baskets laden with items donated by generous businesses all over the Pittsburgh area. Members model the latest fashions from local stores.

"Cooking Through the Century", our brand new cookbook, will debut this year as our third fundraiser.

Our monthly newsletter, "The Chatter", keeps members in touch with each other and aware of all upcoming events. At the end of our club year, all proceeds from our endeavors are distributed to various organizations. Last year, we awarded $14,000 in scholarships to Shaler Area High School seniors and another $12,000 to libraries, volunteer fire companies, outreach programs, Meals-On-Wheels, and various women's and children's shelters in need. We are extremely proud of our accomplishments!

Aside from fundraising, we also have bridge groups, a book club, arts & crafts group, an arts & entertainment group, and a singing group, which entertains each month at Kane Center in Ross.

  • Shaler Area Emergency Medical Service, Inc. is an independent, non-profit, community based ambulance service. It was incorporated in 1992 when Elfinwild, Undercliff, and Shaler Villa Volunteer Fire Departments consolidated their emergency medical operations in order to improve efficiency and emergency responsiveness. This new organization now provides the community with the full range of pre-hospital services. These include: responding on a 24-hour basis to emergency situations where lives are in danger: providing the elderly and chronically ill with access to hospitals and other medical facilities: delivering free and low cost preventative care, and training the community in life saving skills such as CPR and First Aid. Shaler EMS is staffed by a combination of paid and volunteer personnel.
