Documentary Film Series
Wednesday, November 25 at 2:00 pm
On Wednesday, November 25th, at 2:00, Northland will continue its new documentary film series. In November we will show Baraka, an unconventional film with no plot or dialog, but a collection of beautifully filmed scenes from 152 locations in 24 countries.

We will not be meeting in December, but will continue on January 27th with Grey Gardens. Grey Gardens is a crumbling mansion in East Hampton, and home to Edith Bouvier Beale, and her daughter Edie. They are by turns fascinating and pathetic as they ignore their squalid living conditions and revel in their former glory days. Registration for this free program is not necessary. Newcomers are always welcome. View previous documentary films in the series.

Tuesday Night Book Group
Tuesday, December 1 at 7:00 pm
On Tuesday, December 1 at 7:00 pm, the Tuesday Night Book Group will discuss Nothing to Be Frightened Of by Julian Barnes. Booklist called it a "bracing, mordantly funny, and expansive mix of musings, literary criticism, and memoir, in which Barnes confronts the paradoxes, fantasies, horrors, mystery, and inevitability of death."

On Tuesday, January 5 at 7:00 pm, we will discuss American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House by Jon Meacham. Beloved and hated, venerated and reviled, Andrew Jackson was an orphan who fought his way to the pinnacle of power. His friends, family, and his tumultuous times are at the heart of this remarkable book about the man who rose from nothing to create the modern presidency.

The Tuesday Night Book Group meets on the first Tuesday of each month and reads nonfiction only. It is a very friendly group, and newcomers are always welcome. Registration is not necessary. View previous group selections. View suggested group titles: page 1, page 2, or page 3.

Foreign Film Series
Wednesday, December 9 at 2:00 pm
This month's film is a political drama from Israel, The Lemon Tree. A Palestinian woman's family has been tending a lemon grove for over 50 years. When the Israeli Minister of Defense moves in next door, it is decided that the lemon grove must be removed for national security so that terrorists can't hide there to kill him. The woman, Salma, takes the minister to the Supreme Court. Based upon true incidents, this simple story points out the problems between the Israelis and Palestinians. Come join us for this free program on Wednesday, December 9 at 2:00 pm. No reservation is required and refreshments will be served. View previous foreign films in the series.

Second Friday Book Discussion Group
Friday, December 11 at 11:30 am
Nancy Horan has woven the well-known truths and historical facts into her novel that explores the scandalous love story of the famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Mamah Cheney. More than a love story, Loving Frank is a portrayal of an independent, educated woman at odds with the restrictions and taboos of the early 20th century. For January, we will be reading Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson.

Newcomers are always welcome to this friendly group. Bring a brown bag lunch. Discussion will begin at noon. No registration required. View previous group selections.
