Social Security is an important program for everyone. One in every seven
Americans (49 million people) currently receives a monthly Retirement,
Disability or Survivors benefit from Social Security. As you are getting
closer to retirement, you need to start thinking in more detail about
your own retirement and how Social Security fits into the picture. A
speaker from the Social Security Administration will explain what you
need to know about retirement benefits and how to navigate Social Security's
website www.socialsecurity.gov. Using a live Internet connection, you
will learn how to file for retirement benefits online and how to access
the site for other services. Please register online through the
events
calendar, or in person at the adult reference desk.

Slow Food: Caring about the pleasures of real food
Thursday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m.
No, Slow Food is not about cooking in a crockpot. The Slow Food Movement began in the 1980's in Italy when a protest arose over the opening of a McDonald's in a historic location in Rome. From a small group of people interested in sustainable food supplies, eating locally and preserving heritage foodways, grew an international movement with more than 80,000 members in over 100 countries worldwide. The organization supports school programs that encourage children to learn about growing their own food, supports the growing number of CSA farms that offer partnerships with their local communities and promotes safe and sound food production.
Marlene Parrish, of Slow Food Pittsburgh, will present an interesting and informative program dedicated to the revival of the kitchen and the table as centers of pleasure, culture and community. She will offer suggestions for ensuring the quality and safety of the food we buy and explain the pleasures that come from adopting a "slow food" lifestyle.
Please register online through the
events calendar,

Yoga: an exercise for all of us
Thursday, May 29 at 7:00 p.m.
When we think of yoga, some of us picture people who are twisted like
a pretzel or standing on their heads! Actually, there are many forms
of yoga, but its aim is to unite the mind, the body, and the spirit.
It helps a person become more aware of posture and improves flexibility
and helps with relaxation and stress management. Matthew Imhof of Santosha
Yoga Center will present an introduction to yoga, talk about its health
benefits and invite those who wish to try a few of the gentle stretching
and relaxing exercises. Wear comfortable clothing if you'd like to participate.
Please register online through the
events calendar,
or in person at the adult reference desk.
