Websites for Preschoolers
The Internet can help your preschooler learn letters and numbers
and aid in memory, creativity, and problem solving skills
development.
Between
the Lions encourages reading through phonics, alphabet
sequencing, word plays, stories, and spelling. Each game can also be
printed out and played anywhere. (Ages 4-7)
Dragon
Tales is a site that pre-readers and readers will
enjoy. It also includes beginning Spanish vocabulary. Mazes,
storytelling, and word recognition are among the many activities
featured here. (Ages 2-6)
How do you get to Sesame Street? Our favorite way is via
Sesame
Street Workshop, which features counting, reading, and
matching games. This site is not connected to PBS, so episode guides
are listed on the pbskids.org site. Note: some games on this site may take
longer to load. (Ages 2-5)
Caillou
features putting together puzzles, dressing Caillou, and matching
leaves encourage dexterity and spatial relations skills. Preschoolers
can email Caillou or their friends. (Ages 2-6)
Barney
occasionally varies the main "theme," such as family,
friends, or feelings. This site also features something the other
sites do not: shape recognition, an important spatial relations skill.
Northland Public Library's top preschool sites were selected from a
pool of 20 different children's sites. These sites emphasize skills
important for preschoolers and move at a pace that is both age
appropriate and technically accessible to beginning computer
users.
Another factor considered was the quality of parent/teacher
information provided. This information is a valuable tool for you,
providing enrichment activities, educational information and
discussion points for you and your child.
Your preschooler will have the rest of his/her life to learn about
computers. Don't push your preschooler beyond his/her interest or
ability levels. At this age, there is no substitute for free play and
hands-on learning time.
