Boomer Connections: Recareering

Many boomers will be considering a change of career or lifestyle as they reach their 50s... perhaps following their dreams in a field they've always wanted to pursue, full-time or part-time, or stepping out to launch their own business. Instead of planning for retirement, many baby boomers want to work for another 20 years, remain productive, and maximize their potential. They are considering changing their career paths, "recareering" themselves into completely different job descriptions.

Perhaps you've been asking yourself the questions: What are my skills? What job is right for me? Boomer Connections @ Northland Library is presenting a series of workshops and panel discussions to help you explore what those answers could be.

Recareering into your own Business, Part 2
Thursday, March 6 • 7:00pm
Have you always dreamed about owning your own business? Have you wondered what it takes to strike out on your own and make it happen? Volunteer representatives from SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) will be at Northland to give a presentation on two very practical aspects of starting a business: creating a business plan and making a case for financing. This is a follow-up to the very popular Boomer Connections “Recareering Into Your Own Business” program that was offered last November.

Don Carpenter and Art Green will discuss how to determine your needs, identify and evaluate possible lenders, build your case (i.e., write a business plan, resume, and credit history), predict cash flow, and make your presentation to a lender or venture capitalist. While the program is directed toward boomers, anyone interested in starting a business is welcome to attend. Please register online through the events calendar, or in person at the adult reference desk.

Owning your own business: is a franchise right for you?
Thursday, April 3 • 7:00 pm
Thinking about owning your own business: What's involved in owning a franchise and what are the opportunities in our area? What are the steps to take in investigating the success of franchise ownership? What assistance is available in the process? As part of our ongoing programs for Boomers and others who are considering a career change, John Tubridy, franchise consultant and advisor, will answer these questions and more in his presentation at Northland Library. Please register online through the events calendar, or in person at the adult reference desk.

Legal Issues
Thursday, April 17 • 7:00 pm
No one can start a business without considering its legal aspects. Legal issues that must be considered may include:
  • licensing and insurance
  • hiring an attorney
  • incorporation vs proprietorship
  • reducing liability issues
Joel Dennison is an attorney with Reed Smith. His concentration is in mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, and organization and financing of business. Please register online through the events calendar, or in person at the adult reference desk.
