Talking with the Other Steve

As I'm writing this column, I'm waiting, along with other Mac users, to learn what Steve Jobs will have to say next week during his keynote address at this year's WWDC. Just in case you don't know, WWDC stands for Worldwide Developers Conference and it is held to inform developers of upcoming advances in Macintosh technology. It is expected that WWDC 2003 will include a preview release of the next major version of Mac OS X operating system, code-named Panther, and also a look ahead at the future of the Mac platform. While we're waiting to learn about Steve Jobs' vision for the future of computing technology in general and the Macintosh in particular, Mac users who are familiar with the computer's history should remember that Steve Jobs is not the only Steve associated with Apple Computer. Steve Jobs and another Steve, Steve Wozniak, worked together to establish the company in 1976. Steve Wozniak, or Woz, as he is often called, left Apple in 1985 (although he still receives a salary from the company) and has devoted his time and talents to educational and philanthropic causes. He has also dabbled in technology and is currently involved with a startup company named Wheels of Zeus. Steve Wozniak recently attended the silver anniversary celebration of the Maryland Apple Corps in Baltimore. While there, he was interviewed by David Zeiler, who writes a column entitled "The Mac Experience," which can be read on the SunSpot.net web site. Excerpts from this interview appeared in a two-part series on the web site.

Part One, which was published on June 5, 2003, was entitled, "A Conversation with Steve Wozniak." The questions and answers in this part of the interview covered the beginnings of Apple Computer including the first meeting of the two Steves, a description of what they were like in those early days, and the development of the Apple II. You can read Steve Wozniak's account of this period and his opinion of the TV movie, "Pirates of Silicon Valley" in the first part of the interview on the SunSpot.net web site.

In Part Two, "Wozniak Looks Back," which appeared the following week, Woz discussed the Mac versus Windows, his perspective on the digital hub, and his ideas on computers in the future. He also discussed his philanthropic efforts and gave a few hints about possible product announcements from his new company, Wheels of Zeus, which states its objective as "to design and build new consumer electronics wireless products to help everyday people track everyday things."

By the time you read this column, we'll know what Steve Jobs had to say about the upcoming direction of the Macintosh platform at WWDC. As we look ahead, it is also interesting to look back at the beginnings of Apple through the eyes of co-founder Steve Wozniak.
