Friends of the Library
From the beginning the Friends Group at the F.O.R Sto-Rox Library has been involved in the movement to open a library in McKees Rocks. The Friends pitched in to help assemble the furniture, shelve the books, work at the circulation desk and help with programs. As the library grew the role of the Friends Group changed - still pitching in around the library as needed, but also acting as advisors and fundraiser and the Friends Group is as active and committed as ever
The Friends Group holds large community fundraisers each year to help support a library that is fighting for survival in the face of much uncertainty. The money they have raised has paid for new shelving for the library (over $13,000), to have the inside of the library professionally painted with cheerful colors (over $1,500), to provide more than 20 new chairs for the patrons (over $1,200), to remodel the lobby of the library (about $500) and to fund the library's 12 public computers (about $6,000 per year)
Additionally, the Friends keep their ears open for funding and sponsorship opportunities, and pursue them on behalf of the library. They support the staff both professionally and personally, and never get discouraged.
The Friends meet at the library on the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. If you are interested in getting involved, please come to a meeting or call the library.
