National Council on the
Aging (NCOA)
The NCOA is an umbrella association of "organizations and
professionals dedicated to promoting the dignity, self-determination, and well
being of older persons." They promote "vital aging" (a registered trademark),
preferring to think of older people as "the aging," not the "aged." Unlike
commercial sites aimed at seniors, this one is free of annoying ads, and offers
true substance, especially in t he area of policy and legislative updates. Among
its many features, one will find information on adult day services, health care,
housing, independent living, and other topics central to "vital aging."

The mission of The National Center of
Women & Aging (NCWA) is to focus attention on the concerns of midlife and
older women. The site offers excerpts from their newsletters as well as projects

(AoA)

programs. AoA is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

itself as a Web community for adults 55 and older. There is age-targeted
advertising but also a lot of health and recreation information on this site.
The content is clearly presented and useful for novice or expert level computer
user. Instructions on how to add a bookmark or favorite, for example, are very
detailed. Chat areas are geared to senior interests and registration is
free.
