The eiNetwork establishes a New Assistive Technology Lab Downtown! - December 2000
The world of information technology just moved a step closer for people with disabilities. The
eiNetwork, in conjunction with the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, has established a new
Assistive Technology Lab at the Library Center located at 414 Wood Street downtown.
The new lab will help those with visual impairments be able to access information electronically.
The lab features eight new Dell personal computers with Sound Blaster and Jaws technology.
Combined, they provide a speech package that can read what is on the screen to the user. There
is also a MAGic system that magnifies and enlarges text that is on the screen, and Kurzweil, an
optical character scanner that scans in text and displays or speaks displayed screen text. Users
will enjoy a Refreshable Braille Display that reads what is on the screen back to the user in
Braille or outputs text on the printer (embosser) into Braille display.
The eiNetwork works with the Allegheny County Public Libraries to give patrons the ability to
access information electronically. The eiNetwork strives to ensure all patrons have the
opportunity to access this information; the new Assistive Technology Lab will provide this to
those with visual impairments, that's a huge step forward! The eiNetwork has also established
Assistive Technology labs at: Mt Lebanon Public Library, Shaler North Hills Library, Sewickley
Public Library, and the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
